FOSTER CARE AUXILIARY NEWSLETTER JUNE 2007
Thank you to all our volunteers!
We have a lot of Volunteers to thank this month! You can read all our thanks, and stories on our NEW Blog: http://fostercareaux.blogspot.com!

President's Letter

Well, June brings Father’s Day and summer vacation for many of our children.  Our days might be filled with finding ways to keep our children entertained and occupied in a meaningful and productive way.  Did you know that many teens earn their jr. high and high school volunteer hours at our thrift store?  We also can give credit for court ordered community service for those who might have made some not so wise choices and need help to fulfill their hours.
The more profitable our Thrift Store is – the more services we can provide!

As always, if I can answer any questions or if there is anything you would like to discuss, do not hesitate to give me a call.

Kathy Harvey, President
Foster Care Auxiliary of Orange County

Foster Care Thrift Store Finds!!

Isn’t that Joanna Hussey, Foster Care Liaison and the Social Services Rep on the Foster Care Auxiliary Board?  Joanna is a member of the Auxiliary and also looks for bargains like this skirt in our thrift store.  How much did it cost?  You guessed it - $1.50.

Wow! Look at the outfit that Bobbi Ott’s friend, Abbey wore to her son’s March wedding.  Would you believe that it only cost $1.50?  There are many dresses suitable for weddings and proms available at the thrift store for $1.50-$5.

WISH FROM THE AUXILIARY
Base board installation for several small rooms.  We have the base board…we are just in need of someone who might know how and be willing to install it.
Carpet & installation for the Thrift Store.  The carpet we have must be ten years old and ten years of  wear and tear is very evident.  Sure would be nice to finish off all the updates the Auxiliary was able to do in the thrift store with a grant that was specifically for this purpose…unfortunately, we are out of money for this project.

Mariner’s Church Makes Baby Equipment Loaner Program Possible for Foster Families
Mariners Church regularly contributes baby equipment and toys to our program.  The donations, although used are in such good shape that we are setting aside a few of the very best of each item to start a brand new program for our foster families who have new foster placements or foster placements in need.  The foster parent will agree to bring back the item when they are through using it to benefit other foster families.  Got something to donate toward the program?  Call us!  Need something for your little foster one?  Call us!  714 778-3383

WHY SHOULD I HAVE E-MAIL AND HOW CAN I GET IT IF I DON’T HAVE A COMPUTER?
You can view past issues of our newsletters on the web site at any time, but there are times like in April when we were given 211 Angel Baseball tickets and only a few days to give them out that will only be offered to our members through email…or like our weekly bakery donation only offered through email.  Email is here to stay and is so much more efficient than ‘snail’ mail or phone calls and faster too.  If you don’t have a computer to receive last minute offers that sometimes come our way and our regular newsletters, you might consider asking a friend or relative to let you use their email or you can set up a free email account at the library.

Simply go to the public library closest to your home and fill out a very short application form. Ask the library staff if you need help setting up an email address. You will need to bring in your ID (Driver's License or Passport) and a utility bill to show your valid home address. When you check out library books, you can do so from any branch with the same library card and drop it off at any location! It is really very convenient.

CRIS Training available at the Foster Care Auxiliary Resource Center.

Call or email FCAOC if you’d like to receive the C.R.I.S.(Caregiver Recording Information System) training and software at our center.  This training is funded through Saddleback College and includes the software program and will help foster parents cut down time spent doing necessary paperwork.  It will also count toward the training hours that foster parents need.  714 778-3383 FosterCareAux@yahoo.com

Orange County’s Volunteer Management Superheroes!

Chrysty Hodson will be honored on June 5 as one of Orange County’s Volunteer Management Superheroes.   Chrysty tracks our Gifts in Kind donations, picks some of the donations up and brings her own volunteers to sort and stock them on our distribution shelves in addition to her secretarial duties.  She does a great job and deserves to be congratulated!

Foster Care Bookstore!

Books may be checked out as you need them and should be returned at the next scheduled member distribution day or arrangements made to keep them longer. Check out this link on our web site to see the books available. http://www.fostercareaux.com/library.html We are adding books regularly so call if there is a particular book you are looking for…maybe we can add it if we don’t already have a copy.

Foster Family Friend

Darlene Gonzalez has the first successful Foster Family Friend match and is lovin’ it! The volunteer and her children have been meeting with the Gonzales family children for more than three months now. Each week the Foster Family Friend volunteers visit the Gonzalez children. The volunteer children are matched with the Gonzalez children to help with homework and then they all read a story together. Darlene has two children in kindergarten who were not reading prior to the Foster Family Friend and now they have mastered beginner books. Four of Darlene’s six children benefit from the Foster Family Friend each week and they actually look forward to doing their homework when their Foster Family Friends come! When the Foster Family Friend is there, Darlene has some time to collect herself, rest, or make dinner.

Foster Family Friends are volunteers who would like to help foster families by playing a game, reading, helping with homework, etc. in your home. These volunteers are not to be babysitters, but can create some spare time for foster parents. Call or email me if you are interested in being matched with a Foster Family Friend. 714 778-3383 FosterCareAux@yahoo.com Let’s get started! Family Friend.  714 778-3383 fostercareaux@yahoo.com
